Site description

The project can take on a new dimension, taking into account the "Raffineries du Midi" brownfield site, which is to be sold opposite the Nordéon brownfield site but separated by the canal.

This is an ambitious project, but with a real potential that needs to be studied as part of an opportunity and/or feasibility study. Linking the 2 sites by a bridge would create a usable surface area of almost 15 hectares with multimodal logistics (water-iron-road), creating a new hub in the Bourgogne Franche Comté region.

The engineering requirements for this project are considerable, as is the infrastructure development component, which will include a wharf on the Canal du Centre, rehabilitation of the existing rail link and the potential creation of a bridge linking Nordéon to Raffineries du Midi.

Local economic context and training opportunities

The Greater Chalon area is one of Burgundy-Franche-Comté's major industrial hubs. The SaôneOr industrial zone, recognized as a "Zone of Regional Interest" (Zone d'Intérêt Régional) in 2012. This site, on the Paris-Lyon axis, currently boasts 330 industrial establishments employing 6,600 people.

The Nordéon brownfield redevelopment project is part of Grand Chalon's economic development strategy, and could provide an opportunity for significant job creation, thus ensuring continuity in the provision of land suitable for industrial projects.

As part of its forward-looking management of jobs and skills, the region is seeking to create coherent links between the business world and higher education.

With a view to developing new diplomas and training courses, Grand Chalon is working with academic partners and training organizations to develop a training offer geared towards industry and innovation.

The conurbation is therefore working with the University of Burgundy, the Chalon-sur-Saône IUT and SATT SAYENS on a project to develop a platform dedicated to non-destructive testing, bringing together a dozen industrial companies (Nuclear Valley, UIMM, Usinerie Partners, etc.).

The Usinerie, a center of excellence, crystallizes the region's commitment to innovation by bringing together a business center, a FabLab, an event space, a training center and an exceptional technical platform to support the digital and technological transition of industrial companies.

The region has recently embarked on the structuring of a university for nuclear professions, to meet the needs of major contractors such as Framatome.
