Site description
Following the closure of the former Arcelor Mittal site in 2004, the conurbation worked with the State, the Region and the EPF (public land establishment) to propose the redevelopment of this brownfield site at the heart of the region's 2nd largest industrial area.
The site is of strategic importance to the region and beyond, due to its optimal location at the crossroads of 3 regions, its trimodal aspect with a connection to the freight/passenger line on the right bank of the Rhône, direct access to the Rhône or via the port of Ardoise located 500m (1640.4 ft) away, and road access on the RN580.
The EPF thus carried out, on behalf of the urban area, the acquisition of 48 ha of land at the end of 2017. The region and its partners now wish to find one or more industrial activities to reinvest the site, focusing on decarbonized green industry in line with the objectives of the regional project, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality.
Location
Targeted activities for this site
The aim is twofold:
- To host industrial activities linked to existing local sectors, particularly nuclear power. This is all the more important in view of the large-scale investments planned for the region, which will require the development of the ecosystem ;
- Develop new "green industry" sectors such as hydrogen and PV panel production.
Available infrastructures
- LV electrical network
- HTA electrical network
- Natural gas network
- Source substation 1km away with high power availability
Accessibility and services
- Urban transport networks
- Passenger train station
- Intercity bus network
- Major roads
- HGV access

- Port (National Company of the Rhône - CNR)
Current projects to improve site accessibility
- Laudun l'Ardoise bypass to be completed in 2024 ;
- Restructuring of the port of L'Ardoise, 200m (656 ft) away ;
- Construction of a multimodal interchange with passenger station 900m (2952 ft) away (opening in 2026-2027).
Local economic context and training opportunities
The main prospecting targets for this site are manufacturers working in existing local sectors, particularly nuclear. Local companies were consulted about their development needs, which reinforced the importance of supporting the existing ecosystem. Finally, the Territoire d'Industrie label is an added bonus.
The region encourages qualifications in the nuclear sector. Numerous training organizations, such as the UIMM, are present in the region to train young people in the trades that will be recruiting. In addition, the region is located close to major employment areas (Nîmes, Avignon, Orange, Bollène).
The region also encourages qualifications in "Processes and Technologies in Sensitive Environments".
In addition, a CEA is based at the Marcoule site in Chusclan/Codolet (10km - 6.2mi from the wasteland) and generates significant research and innovation activities, supported by a myriad of local SMEs.
